I need to come up with a positioning statement though, and I was wondering if you guys could help me out. Can anyone recommend a positioning statement? Is tourism good for Guam? Is tourism compatible with military? Guam is a beautiful, but small island. Only 212 square miles, with a population of 160,000 people including military families. Over 1.2 million visitors, mostly from Japan & Korea. Average visitor stay is only 3 to 4 days since 1970. Visitor spending is about $680 per visit. The people of Guam love and welcome all visitors enthusiastically. But, tourism is barely supporting our businesses. Guam is only 4 to 5 hours from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Manila, Port Moresby, & mainland China. What should we do? We have very limited resources.

Chinese: where can you travel without a visa? My wife is Chinese, not from Hong Kong, Macaau, Taiwan etc.....she is a citizen of the PRC. I know she can travel to Thailand for 14 days without a visa, but do you know any other countries that allow travel for tourism by people from the Chinese mainland?
Do we really need all of this to go to China for tourism? A valid original passport. There must be blank visa pages in the passport. Pages for endorsements or amendments can not be used as a visa page. The passport should be valid for at least 6 months; (2) One completed Chinese Visa Application Form (please click to download)signed by the applicant. Children's application form can be signed by their parents or guardians; (3) One recent passport photograph affixed to the visa application form. Life photos, copied photos and digital photos printed on ordinary paper are not acceptable. Documents mentioned in part A; (2)A copy of outward and return flight ticket booking; (3)A copy of Chinese hotel booking(please note the applicants who are below 14 years old or born in China (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) as shown in the passport are not required to provide this); If the applicant is going to stay at a relative or friend's home while visiting China, and therefore unable to provide hotel booking, an invitation letter containing the inviter's home address and telephone, and a copy of the inviter's ID card or residence permit should be provided instead. That's pathetic, how am i going to have a booking of my hotel if i'm not even there, And how am i going to book it?? and if i stay at my friends house, i need his copy of ID card?? this is getting ridiculous

Help check this translated article in terms authenticity in English? I translated it from Chinese to English, but not understand if it's authentic or not. If it needs some revision, please correct any sentence if necessary. Since the grand opening of my hotel four years ago, the hotel under my management has been offered with high-price services and is always fully-booked. This phenomenon has since attracted a wide attention nationwide. Many people asked me, "How big is the high-priced market ?", "How many customers can we keep when tourist-rush phenomenon fades away after the opening day?" I have been asked such questions over and over again. In other word, many people only see the domestic market; moreover, they simply position Taiwan's tourism industry only for domestic market needs. It's undeniable that the domestic travel market has a great potential. However, if the tourism industry is only positioned to meet domestic needs, then twenty-three million of the population in Taiwan have to become consumers to reach that target. If that is true, operating measures will have to rely on high tourist flow rate in order to achieve certain operating performance. It will be a hardship for operating a hotel, considering its population. That's why i believe we have to seek international customers in order for a hotel to maintain a steady flow of customers during weekdays and maintain a fully-booked schedule from weekdays to weekend. The turnover will also meet the anticipatory goal this way. Because global travelers travel all the time, every day is holiday to them. It's an unusual phenomenon in Taiwan. However, this phenomenon is not unusual, it occurs to European and American countries as well. However, they have more tourists compared to that of Taiwan, so it's not a problem for them. So, how do we seek for customers in global market? In terms of international tourist business, many may wonder what makes Taiwan an enticing place for international travelers. Many European and American people see Taiwan as a place for business. They see Taiwan as an industrial island, where ( in which ) computers, bicycles, wafers and similar industrial products are produced. It's not a place for tourists. But a Swiss friend told me that Taiwanese enjoyed their trip to Switzerland . However, in his own eyes, Swiss is not a beautiful country. The country is only has two colors during seasons change. White in winter, while green in summer.Unlike Switzerland , Taiwan has a rich resource of natural sceneries which show different characteristics at their low, mid, and high altitude, respectively. My Swiss friend’s viewpoint has certain reference value, because it tells how Taiwan is viewed from a foreigner's standpoint. After all, it's not that Taiwan is an unfavorable traveling country for foreign tourists, but it's simply because we neglect the key role the tourism industry plays in Taiwan and also, we have failed to optimize natural resources the god has bestowed on us. To attract global tourists, we must first enhance both software/hardware facilities to meet international standards. That's why i want to hire some internationally recognized architects to design my hotel. From the standpoint of business management, is there any hotel in any scenic area in Taiwan which could pull its business through a whole year in low or high tourist season ? Sun Moon Lake is no doubt the primary touring spot, with its climate similiar to Spring year-round, convenient transportation and its unique historical status, making it the representation of Taiwan. Moreover, it's equipped with high-end software/ hardware facilities, which makes the place marketable in global tourism market. However, meticulously -planned marketing is indispensable; such efforts as participating in global tourism exposition and inviting important media to make interviews here are all important. Once we target the global market, we will not need to worry when domestic consumer's novelty towards the tourism market will go off, because international tourists will fill the gap. Because most of them stay over three days when they travel, which helps relieve the pressure of business development while greatly decreasing the operating cost. However, these competitive advantages mainly come from the country's global market position.
How do small countries make money? Hi, I was just curious--how do small states/countries generate revenue with their limited natural resources and often high population? For example, I would imagine Hawaii relies heavily on tourism, but Hawaii is a state, which has a sovereign entity as a factor. And Japan, a densly populated country, but exports greatly in technology, and the same goes for Taiwan. So it appears that Tourism helps, as it brings money in from foreign countries, and exports of technology is good as well, as it probably requires less resource (or costs of resource vs revenue) than other productions. That said.. it's just self observation, but I'm really curious. What thoughts do you guys have on this? What are some potential revenues for a small, highly-populated country?

Now where did that question go to?? Yes, the one about the One China Policy that was posted here yesterday. Although the question was political in nature, and yet it does have a bearing on this island's tourism. I know of uninformed friends who won't come here to visit because of a biased view that they might get involved in an untimely war. The said question's answers gave me some insight as to how to approach these "frightened" potential visitors. But since it had been taken down, I lost the notes. Any of you guys care to elaborate again? How do we "unfrighten" these potential visitors so that they get to see all the beauty that Taiwan has to offer? Hi Matt, thanks for the input. Actually, what's odd (I hesitate to use the word 'amusing') about the situation is that the Mainlanders seem to think this land is theirs for the taking (granted that there are no obstacles in place.) I mean, they are uncommonly adamant about it. For me, there's something wrong with the picture because achieving the true spirit of "reunification" does not necessarily entail the merging of the governments (or rather, that Taiwan's gov't be merged upon.) Anyway, at least not in the case of Taiwan, because it's doing pretty well by itself. This might come across as too blunt to people who regard reunification as the ultimate "brotherly bonding." As I see it, a scenario such as the Mainlanders would have it can only mean that Taiwan's government must eventually be dissolved, or worse, play the puppet. It's just not sound political practice to let a thorn continually prick you at the sides. Why I say this is because China's government is basically dictatorial in nature.

Filipinoys, watch out! look who's coming to a neighborhood near you in hordes? http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/07/13/sex.offenders.passports/index.html?hpt=C2 (CNN) -- Thousands of registered sex offenders have received U.S. passports, including at least 30 federal employees, according to a Government Accountability Office report obtained by CNN. The GAO report said the Department of State cannot legally deny passports to registered sex offenders, except those specifically convicted of sex tourism. The report concluded that about 4,500 U.S. passports of the more than 16 million issued in fiscal year 2008 were issued to registered sex offenders. "Federal statutes authorize the Secretary of State to deny issuance of a passport in certain circumstances, such as while an individual is imprisoned or on parole or supervised release for a conviction for international drug trafficking or sex tourism or is in arrearages for child support," the report states. "However, there is currently no comprehensive program to deny passports to applicants who are registered sex offenders." The State Department called the report "very misleading" and adding it "conveys more 'shock value' than factual accuracy." In a written response, the department pointed out that only a fraction of 1 percent of the 16 million passports issued in fiscal year 2008 went to registered sex offenders. In addition, the title of the report "fails to convey that GAO found no lawful reasons for the department to deny or revoke the passports of the case study sex offenders based on their status as sex offenders." "The report appears to suggest, without any foundation, that the Department's issuance of passports to certain Americans facilitated their commission of sex crimes abroad," the department's response said. "There are no facts in the report which show that any of the thirty individuals included in the case studies used his passport to travel to a foreign country to commit a sex crime." The original title of the report, "Passports Issued to Thousands of Registered Sex Offenders," was later changed to "Current Situation Results in Thousands of Passports Issued to Registered Sex Offenders." The GAO report was requested by Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, and Sen. Max Baucus, D-Montana. The GAO studied data from the National Sex Offender Registry (NSOR). However, the approximately 4,500 sex offenders who received passports in fiscal year 2008 "is likely understated because many of the records in the passport database and the NSOR lacked valid Social Security numbers ... In addition, the NSOR does not currently contain a comprehensive listing of all sex offenders from the states." The GAO found cases that include a sex offender from Texas who received a passport while in prison, a Delaware man with multiple sex convictions who traveled to the Philippines, Germany and France since receiving his passport, and a Georgia man who has traveled to the Philippines, Ireland and Panama. Among the federal employees who received passports was an aerospace engineer with NASA, an employee of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and a Postal Service carrier who traveled to Taiwan and Japan after receiving his passport. About 50 of those who received passports either lived outside the United States or "their whereabouts were unknown," the report said. A new law took effect in December 2008 that prohibits anyone convicted of sex tourism from receiving a U.S. passport. However, the report said, the Department of State was not even aware of the law until April of this year after the GAO "brought this statute to its attention." "When Congress passes a law and the president signs it, then the Executive Branch needs to execute it," Grassley said in a statement. "I'm shocked that GAO had to inform the State Department that Congress made individuals convicted of sex tourism ineligible for passports back in December 2008. It's inexcusable that the State Department did nothing to enforce that provision for 14 months. Since someone who is late on child support payments cannot receive a passport, then surely these criminals should also be stopped from traveling internationally." "It also is disturbing that the GAO found examples prior to that new law where the State Department issued passports to convicted sex offenders who fled law enforcement, received government housing subsidies, and work for the Post Office. This report raises a lot of serious questions about how effectively the government protects us from child predators," Grassley said. The report also studied a group of registered sex offenders -- many who held positions of public trust, including a school teacher, religious layman, and health care provider. "Other cases involve registered sex offenders who owe child support or are currently in prison or whose whereabouts ar
