Why do most nations not recognize the Republic of China?
I believe that the Republic of China is much more legitimate than the "People's" "Republic" of China. Why do so many nations favor a communist backward nation over a democratic, developed one?

- Dude, just deal with it and appreciate that you live in a democracy, not every country is like the United States.
- They don't want to pick a fight with the PRC. The People's Republic of China is a nuclear weapons state, one of the five permanent members of the UN security council, the world's most populous country, and one of the world's most prominent and fastest growing military and ecnomic powers. It's just that simple.
- Your " believe" was based on misinform. ROC was form in 1912 by Dr. Sun. It was a multi-party democracy at that time. The two major political parties were nationalist party and communist party. However after Dr. Sun died... when Chiang Kai Shek took over...he ordered the mass arrest and killing of anyone who had different political views from him. Which included the entire communist party, and many nationalist party members who actually had more influence than himself at the time(he eliminated all competition through assassination etc.). People were getting arrested and shot on the streets. Many arrested ones were executed without trial. Then the communist party fought back with a ROC army which was still under their control. That was the beginning of the Chinese civil war. It was interrupted by Japanese invasion/WWII, then it was resumed in 1945. Chiang Kai Shek...was a worse dictator than Mao. Aside the fact he arrested/assassinated loads of people....HE RULED FROM 1925~1975. (1975 was the year he died). Then his son took over...until he died himself too. Was that democracy? It was Kingship! Even Mao did not pass his position to his son or any relative. Taiwan was not "democracy" until 1996. Keep in mind that the U.S. not only helped ROC in propaganda but also militarily over 50 years before it became democracy. How does that give the U.S. any justification for helping a dictatorship like that? Currently, Taiwan is more developed. It had many reasons. First, when Chiang retreated to his last stronghold, he took ALL the gold/silver reserves from all over China to that tiny island. Second, the U.S. helped him with tons of aid. For a tiny island like that, a little aid could be huge capital for development. Third, ever since PRC formed in 1949, the U.S. and its puppets all over the world used blockage and sanction try to kill it while it was still a baby. It was the reason why PRC did not use military force to get Hong Kong back...because they needed a "window" to the world..for trade etc. Even today, do you know there is still a written rule among all capitalist countries that it is not allowed to sell China advanced technologies? (note, it's technologies...not the finished product. It's useless to have a product while you have no idea how it was made). For example, just a few days ago it was said a foreign company was finally allowed to invest and build a plant in China to produce 300mm semiconduct. However, do you know that the current top of the line is 45mm? That was just an example...PRC can't get anything newer than 20 years behind. They have to develop everything themselves from scratch. Unlike ROC...they could just buy the latest technologies and designs and then continue to develop based on them. PRC is behind ROC right now. However, you can't say it is backwards. PRC WAS ROC. It was ROC left a terribly managed country to PRC at the end of the civil war. PRC was merely taking over. Bottom line, RPC is not more backward than how it was when ROC lost the war.
- and I believe you are wrong. "believe" is a funny word.
- I agree with Bob. It's just because of military and economic reasons. But, PRC is NOT one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council. http://www.un.org/aboutun/charter/chapter5.htm PRC actually sneaked into the UN under the name of ROC and has been unscrupulously preventing the authentic ROC from returning to the UN. Unfortunately, the current ROC vs. PRC is not like South Korea vs. North Korea, the later of which have similar areas of land and populations. By the way, Chiang was actually much better than Mao. He insisted on the democracy and gradually implemented the democratic system in China and continued this effort in Taiwan. Many westerners have bias against Chiang. This is because in early time many western scholars were deluded by the propaganda of communists. They thought the communists represent justice and Chiang was a tyrant. They wrote many books which were full of misunderstanding on Chiang. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I lived in Taiwan for 18 years. I don’t agree with someone’s Taiwanese friend. No, the so-called “white terror” happened AFTER the civil war. When Taiwan, the small island, became the last hope of a democratic China, if you were the president, what would you do?? If I were Chiang, I would do everything possible to prevent the communists and communism from penetrating Taiwan. That is the "white terror" someone mentioned. Yes, many suspected communists were killed. ROC is a democratic nation. But because of the Japanese invasion and the civil war with the communists, the martial law had been enforced during such long critical time. How could a nation in such a hard and chaotic situation jump from an old empire to a democratic nation like the U.S. in just a few tens of years? Of course in Chiang’s era, the nation is not as democratic as it is in present days. But basically province governors, county and city mayors were all elected by people. And a president was elected by the representatives. The martial law was finally lifted in 1987 by Chiang Ching-Kuo. No one said Chiang Kai-Shek is equal to democracy, but he protected the environment where the democracy can continue to grow up. Without Chiang and his son, Taiwan had become a province of PRC long time ago. If North Korea’s Kim were indeed like Chiang, we could expect North Korea to become a real democratic nation in the near future. That would be great!
- The OP is extremely biased. He blocked people for telling the truth. So was the dude who said Chiang Kai Shek= democracy. It's the biggest joke! FACT = Chiang Kai Shek ruled as president of ROC from 1925~1975 until he died. His son Chiang Ching-kuo took over and ruled as president until 1988 when he died. How was that democracy? <-------------Can you actually answer this question?---------------> How was it a democracy when father and son both ruled until they died? They did exactly the same thing as North Korea's Kim. Even all the Taiwanese knew ROC was not democracy until 1996. One of my Taiwanese friends was even talking about the "white terror" committed by Chiang Kai Shek before the Chinese civil war. Westerners were always on the side of ROC. It's the exactly reason why PRC was not accepted by UN for almost 30 years after it was formed. Even after they finally had PRC placed ROC in UN(not because they changed their mind, but because PRC gained more support from smaller countries), they still trash talk PRC on daily basis with propaganda. Such propaganda had completely grabbed the souls of many people who can't think straight for themselves...including the "smart" guy who claim he likes democracy but blocking the people who answered something he didn't want to hear.
- Cesare B., "Democracy"? Who are you kidding? You banned most people who had answered your questions from viewing your questions ever again just because they stated certain true facts you hate to hear. No wonder you support ...
